Ladies and gentlemen, there is a new public enemy number one for every card-holding member of Patriot Nation. In case you missed it, Sam Monson made a public declaration of war on ESPN’s website claiming that our golden boy, Mr. Tom Terrific, is no longer a top-five NFL quarterback. Is Monson a bumbling fool who’s accusation has no leverage, or are we to start mourning the decline of a legend?

Dry your tears Patriot’s fans. There is no need to cry because one mean ESPN know-it-all called our sacred cow a bad name. Instead lets embrace his attempt diminish that effulgent Tom Brady sparkle.

Brady, a three-time Super Bowl Champion, two-time Super Bowl MVP, two-time NFL MVP, nine-time Pro Bowler and a five-time AFC Champion is getting old. His numbers have slipped and therefore his elite status is being revoked; cue  the gasps. Perhaps Monson is justified in making these claims. Maybe he’s spot on. None of that matters, though. Allow me to explain.

The thought of Brady’s talent being called into question should tickle us pink. Let’s all remember that gangly young kid out of Michigan in 2000 who had to watch team after team pass on him. Finally, in the sixth and second-to-last round, the New England Patriots select our boy with the 199th pick in the draft. Fast forward a little more than a year when starter Drew Bledsoe goes down with an injury and the future of the franchise is handed to this same 24-year-old unproven kid.
I think we all know the rest.
Now, as a 36-year-old future Hall-of-Famer, He still has a gigantic chip on his shoulder with 199 written across it in bold. The Patriots are used to being disrespected and underestimated. They feed off of it. It’s not just Brady. It’s all of them. After “spygate,” Bill Belichick was challenged by the league and written off as overrated. New England answered with the first 16-win season in league history. Before Super Bowl XXXIX, Belichick passed out a premature copy of the Philadelphia Eagles’ championship parade route to all of his players. The Eagles fell 24-21 to Belichick and the Brady bunch. They love it, so we should all thank Monson. The Patriots are at their best when they find a rallying cry and he served one up on a silver platter. So, Mr. Monson, us Patriots fans will remain loyal to our boy Tom. We all know he is still a dangerous man with the pigskin in his hand. All we need to do now is sit back, kick our feet up and enjoy the show. The 2014 season should be a lot of fun.
