The gentleman is a dying breed. Fewer men, or shall we say
boys, are concerned with the concept of proper etiquette and manners. There
aren’t many who know the correct behavior when in the company of a lady. Not
enough men act appropriately in social settings. Well, as we have done before,
here are five more tips to help lead you down the path to more gentlemanly
behavior.
5. Hold the Door
This isn’t exclusive to when you’re out entertaining a
lady. You should always consider others around you with this simple display of
manners. Always check behind you when you enter or exit through a door to see
if there is someone following.
When with a lady, you’ll want to take the door-holding a
step further. You’ll want to hold the door and allow her to walk through first.
This sticks with a gentleman's rule that’s been given before (the she’s first
rule).
4. Lend Her Your
Arm.
Any lady loves to go on a nice romantic walk with their
man. Take your lady on one and just enjoy the moment. When you start your
stroll though, lend her your arm. Allow her to wrap her arm in yours and lean
into your shoulder. This is one of those moments where you can make her feel
safe. Also, it’s almost like a walking cuddle session, which she’ll love. If
you feel strongly about her, I’m sure you’ll like it too.
3. Stay Groomed.
There’s nothing wrong with some facial hair and some less-than-casual
attire, but let’s not go crazy. You want to maintain your personal hygiene.
This should go without saying, but unfortunately it’s not universally
understood. Clean your teeth, brush your hair and trim the beard.Get all those
wrinkles out of your shirt and slacks and take off those sneakers with the hole
in the bottom. Just stop it. Take care of yourself!
2. Be Punctual
If you tell a lady you’re going to pick her up at 8, then
pick her up at 8. Being late is a sure fire way to set a bad impression. Do your
best to plan ahead for traffic. Plan for anything! If for any reason you
realize you’re going to be even a minute late, call. Let her know you’re stuck
in traffic and will be there as soon as possible and apologize for the delay.
Just like holding the door, this isn’t exclusively a rule
for when you’re with a lady. Always be punctual and on time for any of your
engagements.
1. Walk on the
curb-side of the sidewalk.
This is a rule that most modern men have never even heard
of. It can often go unnoticed, but that doesn’t render it any less important.
The idea is that you are putting yourself in harms way for her. You’re putting
her ahead of you. If a car jumps the curb or splashes a puddle, you can get her
out of the way quicker.
Being a gentleman shouldn’t be considered an old time
idea. It will still get you very far. The right people will admire you more for
it. More folks will take an interest in you if you show that you have an
interest in them. Being a gentleman will work wonders. If you put others ahead
of yourself, you’ll be amazed by the results.
Stay tuned for more rules to being a true gentleman.
